A relatively minor winter snow event transforms the normally bustling Mass DCR bike path along the Memorial Drive side of the Charles River into an impassable sea of rutted ice. Meanwhile, the Jamaicaway and Muddy River paths are no match for my studded bike tires, the difference being that someone actually plowed on our side of the river. Perhaps the sidewalk ploughmen’s union called a wildcat strike in Cambridge over the weekend to protest slush. Alas, no one else seems to care that a cyclist in winter must ride on city streets. Suck it up, tough guy.
I’m not always great at sucking things up, so I took the train from West Roxbury to Cambridge today, a 10 mile trip that set me back an astonishing $16. Tomorrow, I revert to sucking it up.
