The poem I recently published (on this website) about slacks was inspired by a visit to the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, MA to see Debo Band and groove to their Ethiopian funk vibe. They bring along the guitar, bass and drums, and then pepper in trombone, tenor sax, electric fiddle, accordion, sousaphone (!!), and a vocalist who sings exclusively in Ethiopian.
I’m fully aware as most people are that there are something like 90 languages spoken in Ethiopia, none of which are called “Ethiopian.” Look, stop arguing with me. He’s singing in some language spoken in Ethiopia, OK?
Anyway, the singer, Bruck Tesfaye, is quite debonair in his slacks, and I believe he will lead a new wave of slacks-wearing. He also might spur a new wave of shoulder-shimmying, which he does repeatedly during Debo Band’s shows. You can see the band and the slacks, hear the big noise, and watch shoulder-shimmy here. Better yet, visit the Lizard Lounge, where they are in residence for the next 3 Thursdays (1/30/14, 2/6/14, and 2/13/14). Not to be missed!
